"I walked into my first belly dance class with Amira in October of 2003. I was an astonishing 62 pounds heavier then. I felt awkward and out of place as I stood waiting for the class to begin. I just knew in my heart that I wouldn't be very good at this but I had to try.

SheryFrom the moment she took her place at the head of the class she had my undivided attention. She never made me feel awkward even when it was hopelessly obvious that I didn't know what I was doing. She just encouraged me to keep going. Never apologize for being who you are. Embrace it and dance. Since then my waistline has dropped and my confidence has risen. She helped me to remember what it was like to feel strong and sexy at the same time.

I have had many opportunities to watch Amira dance and she never ceases to absolutely captivate me. She is as knowledgeable in technique as she is passionate about her art form. She is a capable yet patient teacher and a mesmerizing performer. She possesses an inner strength that is both calming and empowering."

Dear Fellow Belly Dance Enthusiast:

Are you like me? I ALWAYS wanted to learn how to belly dance, but I was afraid to try.

I was pretty sure I wouldn’t be any good at it anyway – I was uncoordinated and overweight.

As a teenager I suffered a debilitating illness which left me weakened and shaky, with a body that shut down to the point of storing everything I ate as fat, and I went from below 100 pounds to over 240 in the few months of my recovery. I’d thought about learning belly dancing for years, even dreamed about it since I was a child, but I had no clue where to find a belly dance class, and that was long before classes were available on instructional videos.

I knew I had to do something fast.

I tried taking exercise classes at the JC, but I was too weak. I tried other dance classes too, but I was just so lost (I was so fat and didn’t know any of the steps, and all these people in their thong leotards… just didn’t work for me). I even tried senior water aerobics! I just couldn’t do it!!!

I’d just about given up when I ran across a belly dance class at a women’s center, and it specifically said "no experience needed" and "any fitness level". Wow….Belly Dancing??? I took a deep breath and signed up.

I still remember walking into that very first bellydance class. I was nervous and felt very self conscious – I was just huge at that point – and I so wanted this to be the thing that worked for me. I was so scared, and knew I’ve always been so uncoordinated, but…

I found a spot way in the back of the class, and strained my way through the warm up – I was nowhere CLOSE to touching my toes! But I did the best I could, and even though I was sweating and weak and my knees felt like Jello, I walked out of that first class COMPLETELY HOOKED! I knew at that moment this was the thing I’d be involved in for the rest of my life.

Never for one second did I think I’d ever be good enough to get up and perform, but I knew I’d always dance for myself.

I realized one important thing: Almost Everyone is AWFUL When They Are First Learning Something NEW!!

And that one thing helped me to keep going back, week after week, and keep trying.

Can you believe it? Three months later, still at over 200 pounds, I performed at an Arab family wedding with 217 people! I shook like a leaf, but I LOVED IT!!! And, over the past 30+ years, I have averaged 300 belly dance performances a year. I’ve lost over 100 pounds, gained a lot of muscle, feel fit and invigorated and have all the energy I need now, at 51, to run my own nutrition business, teach many belly dance classes a week, run a dance company and perform. I’ve recovered from a cracked kneecap, a displaced vertebrae in my spine, bursitis, tendonitis and carpal tunnel and ankle issues. I know every excuse there is – I’ve tried them all, and I’ve worked past each and every one of them in order to do something I love, and excel at it. And at the end of the day, I can say "I'm a professional Bellydancer!!!" And I'm good at it.

Don’t get me wrong – I’M NO DIVA. I’m not one of the famous belly dancers everyone’s heard of, who has their immense following of devotees. Nope. I’ve danced with them – many of them – for years, and for the most part, I didn’t learn much. I turned instead to teachers who would actually focus on me, fix my body flaws, strengthen my weak areas, push me to learn, refine and perfect my techniques. The real bellydance teachers, the ones who focus on you and truly want your complete and total success are NOT the divas. They are the ones for whom the dance did not come easily, the ones who have had to fight for it.

I remember trying to get started, and also trying to get better as I grew in the dance. I was thinking:

bullet

I don’t know where to go for the belly dance training that will work for me.

bullet

I was SO tired of throwing money away on live classes and instructional belly dance videos that talked above my head or didn't give me what I needed or expected.

bullet

I wanted to feel supported so I could learn the way that's right for me.

bullet

I tried other belly dance classes but didn't connect with the teacher or wasn't able to follow her teaching style. The "do what I do" style without breaking down the steps just doesn't work for a lot of people and can lead to injury too.

bullet

I tried doing it on my own, but it didn't work for me.

bullet

I felt held back by something, but wasn't sure what.

But you know, somewhere deep down inside, that if you could only LEARN how to do this, you could be a great bellydancer, or just have way too much fun….

ANYBODY can Belly Dance if you have the right teacher!!!

I didn’t have the right belly dance teacher at the beginning. I saw myself on video one day and thought, "Oh this is NOT good!" I decided to remake myself, literally from the ground up. I started with a personal dance trainer from the best belly dance school in the WORLD, and I recreated myself into a strong, graceful, creative and expressive Middle Eastern dancer. Through this process, I have created a practical, results driven instructional belly dance program via in-studio classes and instructional bellydance videos and DVD's that I’ve been using with my own dance company and students for years now, and achieving AMAZING results!

It doesn’t matter where you are now…

whether you have never danced and want to learn to belly dance or if you’ve been dancing but feel uncoordinated, tripping over your own feet, or can’t seem to learn a choreography or if you’ve been studying with someone but feel like you JUST CAN’T GET IT… Sometimes all you need is someone to explain it to you the right way.

With this unique instructional belly dance system, you can learn from the very beginning and grow to achieve the absolute BEST you are capable of as a dancer.

"Having performed and studied with Amira for over 15 years, I can testify both to her skill and creativity as a belly dancer and her dedication to the art form.

Amira’s command of Middle Eastern and Indian dance technique is superb and is based upon a dedication to the classical forms of Egyptian Raqs al Sharki. Her dancing is supported and enlivened by her deep study of Egyptian culture, both ancient and modern, including learning the language. In terms of physical preparation and technique, she demands much of both herself and her students, but the result is superlative technique in performance. Her choreography is exciting and creative. Her background as a professional musician gives her an unsurpassed sense of how to match movement to music, and this is evident in the sure artistry with which she creates dances both for herself and for others.

Other things that distinguish her are her unusually highly developed skill as a drummer, her professionalism and business experience, and her unselfishness and openness as a person."

--Kirk Templeton, Wind Mountain Institute /Martial Arts trainer/ Middle Eastern Percussionist
